Here at Yamasaki Academy of Woodbridge we do things a little different for our MMA fighters. After the event, Mario spoke with UFC referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy if there were any referee positions available with the company, and was told that the company was looking for someone, marking the beginning of Mario Yamasaki’s career as an MMA referee.

Today there are more than 40 professional organizations and 100s of amateur organizations around the world. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), having started the rise in popularity of this style of fighting in 1993, quickly adopted these new rules and the modern sport of MMA explode across the world. Before this, MMA was not regulated and the sport was made illegal in the USA. MMA uses a set of rules and criteria developed and approved first by the California athletic commission in April and then New Jersey in September of 2000 known as the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, incorporates techniques from various other combat sports and martials into a full-contact combat sport that uses striking, grappling and ground fighting to win a match.
